How Many Marriages End in Divorce?

Every year, quite a few couples in Georgia and elsewhere decide to end their marriages. Many people believe that the divorce rate in the United States is roughly 50 percent. An article in Psychology Today debunks that myth.

So, how many marriages do actually end in divorce? It is now believed that only one-third of all married couples pursue divorces — far less than the 50 percent that has been reported for decades. What reasons drive people to end their marriages?

Television, movies and books make it seem like there needs to be some big blowout or issue that drives a couple to divorce. Infidelity, abuse and addiction all come to mind. While such things certainly do happen and are issues in a number of marriages, in most cases, couples just grow apart. They have different ideas for how they see their future and feel disappointed in their relationships. At the end of the day, it does not matter why one wants to divorce; if one is ready to move on it is probably best to take the steps to do so rather than sit in an unhappy marriage.

Dealing with divorce is difficult. Wanting to end a marriage and getting through the complex red tape of doing so are very different things. Thankfully, there are a number of options open to Georgia residents who wish to dissolve their marriages. An experienced divorce law attorney will be able to assist one in negotiating or litigating a fair settlement and finalizing the dissolution as swiftly as possible.
